Typing Games for Computer Centers

Computers are a huge part of our lives.  In MOST jobs you need basic computer skills and to keep up this the changing times, it is EXTREMELY important that students know how to type and use computers with ease.  It actually surprises me that we don't have a computer class here at Hollywood considering I remember taking computers in 5th and 6th grade.  Regardless, students can easily practice typing at home if a computer is available.  Students know how to play Angry Birds and games using the arrows up, down, left, and right, but most still search for each letter at an extremely slow pace when typing.  In middle school, high school, college, and throughout adult life, typing is important.  The faster/better you are at typing and navigating a computer, the better.  Soooo.... here are some typing websites to practice at home.  They are fun and engaging, but useful too.  You all know I can type quickly so I challenge you!  Practice throughout the year and come June I will have a "TYPE-OFF" with someone.  If you win, we will discuss your prize.  Good Luck!!!

Free Digital Books Online!

Today I shared a wonderful resource with the students.  Mrs. Krussman, our reading specialist informed all teachers about "MyOn Reader... my choice, my books, my growth."  It is a wonderful database full of FREE digital books!

Prince George's County Public Schools set this up for students.  It is a digital library with HUNDREDS of digital books from Capstone Digital.  You can use any computer (with internet) to access the site!  Students and parents can access these digital books for individual reading, homework, research, and FUN!

Families are encouraged to spend time together reading and learning.  All of the digital books have reading supports (highlighting and audio so you can listen to the story as well).  There are various genres, titles, and topics.

Please check it out! It is for YOU!

American Education Week

Being that I am on the American Education Week committee at my school and it's right around the corner, I decided to share the teacher letter along with the poster that I made.  The 91st celebration of American Education Week will take place November 12th through November 16th with a "Parent Visitation Day" on Wednesday, November 14th.  I hope it goes well for everyone and I'd love to hear what types of things you do at your schools!

Clouds

We just finished learning about clouds! The kids made cloud riddles and used cotton balls to make their cloud of choice. I also took real life pictures of clouds and had them guess what kind.

National gallery of art field trip

In preparation of our field trip to the National Gallery of Art, we were sent 4 beautiful books, two posters, and a bunch of resources and common core style activities! I am so impressed and excited!

Recycling

I started a recycling "center" in my own classroom to try to alleviate the recycling issue at our school.  Basically, I bought a HUGE zip lock bag and wrote "RECYCLING" on it.  We put our recycled items in the bag each day and at the end of the day a student takes it home, dumps it with their home recycling, and then brings the bag back.  The next day I give the kids an "Awesome ECOkid Award."  The students LOVE it, but we need something school wide.
